India Travel Tips: written in white text over a photo of the Taj Mahal on a sunny day with blue sky.

All my posts about travel in India! Colourful, chaotic, spiritual, fascinating, and absolutely beautiful… this is one of the most magical countries to discover in Asia.

India is by far one of my favourite countries in Asia. I’ve visited three times and am always absolutely spellbound by this wonderful nation. Don’t get me wrong, it can be a tough place to travel – especially as a solo female traveller – but that extra effort is always rewarded with so many special experiences. And I’ve shared all my tips to make your trip as smooth as possible.

India Travel Tips

Don’t forget, you’ll need a visa or ETA to enter India. Most travellers from the UK and the USA should be able to purchase an ETA (electronic visa waiver) online. The official site to apply is the Indian Visa Online portal: make sure to use this official site to avoid any fraudulent services.

Travellers from the UK can get the latest info about entry requirements here.

Getting Around

  • Public Transportation: Use trains and buses for affordable travel between cities. The Indian Railways network is extensive and a popular choice.
  • Car Rentals: Renting a car with a driver is common and convenient for exploring remote areas. You can also book a private taxi to travel between major cities: it’s more expensive than travelling by bus or train but may feel safer.
  • Ride-Sharing: Uber and Ola are widely available in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

Safety

  • Emergency Numbers: Dial 112 for emergencies. Other specific numbers include:
    • 100: Police
    • 101: Fire Brigade
    • 102: Ambulance
  • Pickpocketing: Be cautious in crowded areas and keep your belongings secure.
  • Health Precautions: Drink bottled water and be cautious with street food to avoid stomach issues. I also recommend using hand sanitiser to wash your hands regularly, especially before eating.
  • Check out the NHS Fit for Travel Page for more information.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Accommodation: Consider budget hotels, hostels, or guesthouses for cheaper stays.
  • Food: Eat at local dhabas (roadside eateries) and street food stalls to save on meals. Just remember to be careful – avoid places that don’t have high hygiene standards.
