Italy Travel Tips: written in white text above a photo of an Italian cathedral with a tower and red roofed dome in florence against a sunset sky.

All my posts about travel in Italy! Land of pasta, historic churches, glittering lakes, the snowcapped Dolomites, beautiful cities, and the rolling countryside of Tuscany.

Italy is one of the European countries I know best. I’ve visited numerous times and have explored this dreamy county from top to the tip of the “boot”! With its incredible food scene, rich history, beautiful coastline, and ancient architecture, there’s a lot to love about Italy.

Italy Travel Tips

Getting Around

  • Public Transportation: Use buses and trains for affordable travel between cities.
  • Car Rentals: Renting a car is ideal for exploring remote areas and national parks.
  • Ride-Sharing: Uber is available in major cities, but only the premium service Uber Black. Instead, consider local taxi apps like Free Now, which is the most popular alternative.

Safety

  • Emergency Numbers: Dial 112 for emergencies.
  • Pickpocketing: Be cautious in crowded areas and keep your belongings secure.
  • Weather Preparedness: Dress in layers and be prepared for sudden weather changes. Remember that Italy, especially the south, can get very hot in the summer. Use sun cream, cover up, stay hydrated, and try to avoid the midday sun.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Accommodation: Consider hostels, budget hotels, or Airbnb for cheaper stays.
  • Food: Eat at local markets and trattorias to save on meals.
  • Off-season: Summer is the peak travel season in Italy. During the Autumn and winter, most destinations are generally quieter, and prices are often lower. While it won’t be beach weather, winter can still be pretty warm in Italy – and the conditions are ideal for sightseeing in cities like Rome and Milan.
