Japan Travel Tips: written in white text over a photo iof snowy Mt Fuji with cherry blossom in the foreground and clear blue sky.

All my posts about travel in Japan! Land of sushi, samurai, Pokemon, anime, cherry blossom, geishas, insane vending machines, and elaborate tea ceremonies.

Japan is by far one of my favourite countries in Asia. From the chaos of downtown Tokyo to the serenity of Kyoto’s temples or the heights of Mt Fuji, there’s so much to discover. And, of course, the food is incredible!

Japan Travel Tips

Getting Around

  • Public Transportation: Use trains and buses for affordable travel between cities. The Japan Rail Pass is a great option for unlimited travel on JR trains.
  • Ride-Sharing: Uber is available in Tokyo, but taxis and public transportation are more commonly used.

Safety

  • Emergency Numbers: Dial 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance services.
  • Pickpocketing: Japan is generally very safe, but it’s always good to be cautious in crowded areas and on public transport.
  • Google Translate: Download the Google Translate app and the Japanese language pack before your trip. You can use the camera function to scan and translate signs and ticket machines etc on the go.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Accommodation: Consider hostels or capsule hotels for cheaper stays. Guest houses can also be an affordable alternative to hotels, but they often provide futons rather than beds, which some Western tourists may find uncomfortable.
  • Food: Eat at local markets, convenience stores, and ramen shops to save on meals.

Visa Requirements

  • Visa or ETA: Many nationalities can enter Japan visa-free for short stays, but check the specific requirements for your country. If you’re from the UK you can check the latest info here.
