USA Travel Tips: written in white text over a photo of the Statue of Liberty against blue sky

All my posts about travel in the USA: things to do, places to visit, road trips, train rides, itineraries, theme park hacks, and more!

Ever since my first trip to Florida as a teen, I’ve loved travelling to the United States. It’s one of the countries I’ve visited the most: I’ve explored 9 states so far (soon to be 10) and taken some epic road trips.

Is the USA Safe for Solo Female Travel?

The short answer is YES: overall, the USA is very safe for solo female travellers. However, there are a few issues to be aware of, so it’s a good idea to do plenty of research before your trip. Here are a few basic tips – you can read more on my Solo Female Travel Tips page.

  • Learn the local emergency numbers – in the USA, it’s 911.
  • Research problem areas before your trip. Certain areas of some cities can have a high crime rate. In NYC, for example, areas like Hunts Point, East New York and Brownsville are some of the more dangerous neighbourhoods.
  • Don’t walk alone in quiet or unlit areas late at night. It may be best to avoid public transport after dark, too, unless it’s still busy.
  • Protect your belongings: keep valuables out of sight and be wary of pickpockets, especially in busy/crowded areas and on public transport.

TOP TIP: Buy an eSIM so you always have data. Airalo‘s USA eSIMs start from $4.5 – use code EMILY9237 to get $3 off your first purchase.
